Added some new links to the side bar over there, added some work to our roster. Everything seems to be going as the (fill in the blank of your favorite deity or science) Universe has it planned. Or not planned. Not much to say, except I mean to write more in this on a regular basis. SXSW is coming up(March!), Acro-cats tour is coming up(April!), and the warmth that Texas starts to feel every time about this year is upon us. I think I am going to go out and work in the garden. But first, this – one of my favorite movies: One of the best movies ever made! Holy Mountain, by Alejandro Jodorowsky. Enjoy.
I remember the first “anti-sxsw” show I ever went to. It was called FXFU (or Fuck By Fuck You if you want all the explicatives) and it was great. Rowdy bands, off the beaten path of the main-stream of event attendees, and lots and lots of free crappy keg beer. Did I mention the music? The first time I ever saw Kinski, now one of my top 25 favorite bands, was at a FXFU show. Along with Guitar Wolf, Gorch Fock, (who were the masterminds behind the whole event, pretty much) and uhm….okay I can’t remember much of the rest of the day (did I mention lots of free beer?) but it was great, and it was the BEST thing to do if you werent going to “do” South by. You could stay there all day, see a sampling of the best that the official event was going to bring (and some who would never get to play said event) and do it all for free. I think they got up to 5 or 6 of them before it had to end. And, as with everything great and weird and amazing, it had to end. It was a lot of work, and a lot of trouble if any of you have ever even attempted to throw parties at all, especially in Austin, and ESPECIALLY during that week.
The official SXSW event itself is growing so big its bursting at the cities seams, and all the once off-the-beaten paths that FXFU and other shows of its kind once graced is now engulfed in official and corporate crap shows. That brings me to why I brought you all here today. Johnny Cash (aka Breakdancing Ronald Regan) and Austin Noise seem to be keeping the spirit of Fuck You alive with Suxby. The third of its kind (sux by sux west 3) is coming to us on St. Patrick’s day this year, March 17th, 2013. Noisy, raunchy, loud and diverse – if looks and smells like a big fuck you then it most definitely is. This year it will be at the poorly lit and always awkward Club 1808 – a perfect match for the strangeness that will ensue during the show, I am sure. This year, Johnny has started a campaign to raise money for the event – if you send money you get some shit for donating, and it help with some of the costs of putting the show on. These things always cost money, whether its transportation for the bands, or renting the venue, getting some kind of decent PA, or even buying hot dogs for the door guys. Here is the link to his campaign site: http://www.indiegogo.com/suxby. If you want to continue to see choices outside of what the huge downtown machine force feeds on us, then I suggest you donate something…or don’t bitch about it when it REALLY starts SUXing…
Getting ready for SXSW 2013. It is January, so it will feel like only two weeks have passed before the week arrives, and our fair city of Austin swells by 2 million new people – or more. I felt like now was the best time to start swimming in synthesizers to get fully prepared for the onslaught of talent to head my way. So currently I am listening to Laid Back, Gary Neuman, Newcleus, and other late 70s/early 80s music that was, yes, before my time, but aaaah soo soo soo good – and relaxing. Because I already know a few things – like for example the garage bands will fight their way to the top again this year, and blow my sensitive brains out with walls of sound. My perssonal goal is to focus less on music and more on the other aspects of the festival/corporate blow out – like video art and film. Hopefully we will have a bit of a mix of all, yes?
